SCARAB COURSE 2012

The Scarabaeoidea is one of the largest superfamilies in the Coleoptera and includes approximately 2,200 genera and about 31,000 species worldwide. Scarabaeoids include dung beetles, trogids, hybosorids, chafers, and rhinoceros beetles. The superfamily is a large, diverse, cosmopolitan group of beetles which are adapted to most habitats, and they are fungivores, herbivores, necrophages, coprophages, saprophages, and sometimes carnivores.

The first offering of the "Scarab Course" will take place in western slope of the Andes from Peru. The main ecosystems presents in the area are Montane, pre-montane, and Cloud forests of the central latitudes of Peru.

The Scarab Course will provide students with:
  1. Skills to identify Scarabs genera and species
  2. An understanding of specimen processing and curation techniques
  3. An appreciation for the biological diversity and evolution of Scarabs
